(Reuters) - A powerful storm capsized several sailboats participating in a regatta off the coast of Alabama, leaving four people missing, the Coast Guard said on Sunday.
One person was rescued from the waters in Mobile Bay, where severe weather struck the Dauphin Island regatta on Saturday afternoon, the Coast Guard said.
At least one person was confirmed dead, Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier told the news site AL.com.
"Apparently there were a number of vessels that became distressed, either capsized or what have you. They were scattered anywhere from Dauphin Island Bridge all the way out into Mobile Bay and across to Fort Morgan. It was a wide area," Collier told the site.
More than 100 vessels and about 200 people were participating in the race, the Coast Guard said.
Crews were using rescue vessels and a helicopter to look for the missing people.
