Extended daylight saving time ends this weekend - Canada

Daylight saving time (DST), also known as summer time, ends in many parts of Canada this weekend and readers should remember to move their clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night.

This year’s extended daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday November 1st. This weekend is the third time that most Canadian clocks will “fall back” on the first Sunday in November.

Extended Daylight savings time (DST) began in Canada in March 2007 following the passage of the Energy Policy Act in the United States. The Act extends Daylight Saving Time in the United States by four weeks from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November. In 2006, most Canadian governments adopted Extended Daylight savings time in order to stay in sync with its biggest trading partner.

Daylight Saving Time was first enacted in Germany in 1915 and was later adopted by Britain, much of Europe and Canada.

Some areas of Canada won’t be moving their clocks back on Sunday because they never bother with it to begin with. Areas across Canada that don’t adhere to DST include:

* The areas of Québec, east of 63° west longitude, do not change to daylight time and remain on Atlantic Standard Time all year round.

* Most of Saskatchewan uses Central Standard time all year round.

* Lloydminster is in the Mountain Time zone and change at 2:00 a.m. local time, as in Alberta.

* Nunavut covers 3 time zones and all zones change at 02:00 local time. Southampton Island remains on Eastern Standard time all year long.
