A new 'Alien' film is on the way.
Is that a good idea?
It might be this time, as Ridley Scott, who directed the classic original "Alien" in 1979, returns to produce, and "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp has signed up, according to Variety.
The South African director hinted last month he was working on a new film for the franchise, posting a picture of the iconic Xenomorph on Instagram, according to Rolling Stone. But he also captioned the photo, "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore."
But the Xenomorph recently reappeared on Blomkamp's Instagram, with the note "Um ... So I think it's officially my next film."
That's great. I hope it has aliens in it. Maybe even aliens who kill people -- that would be fun.
Earlier reports speculated franchise veteran Sigourney Weaver would participate, but that has not been verified. Little else is known about the supposed new film, other than it will take place years after the sequel to "Alien" prequel "Prometheus."
Blomkamp is best known for his acclaimed 2009 film "District 9," which used an alien invasion scenario to comment on apartheid and class and social inequality.
Blomkamp's next film is "Chappie," which tells the story of a police-force robot reprogrammed to understand human emotion and behavior. It stars Weaver and Hugh Jackman and hits theaters March 6.
