Carl Edwards has been the subject of much talk the past few weeks regarding his post-2014 future with Roush Fenway Racing.
On Saturday evening, Edwards made headlines for another reason by winning the pole for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Edwards set the quickest time under the exhibition race's unique qualifying format in which each driver completes three laps and makes a mandatory four-tire pit stop with no pit-road speed limit.
Edwards, who is in a contract year with RFR, will share the front row for Saturday night's 5-segment, 90-lap exhibition with Joe Gibbs Racing's Kyle Busch, who held the pole before Edwards set the session's fastest 3-lap speed of 146.915 mph.
Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, and reigning Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson completed the top five.
Positions six through 10 on Saturday night's 22-driver grid belong to Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano.
As expected, several drivers experienced miscues as they barreled down pit road as fast as possible to the attention of their crews.
Among those who overshot their pit stall was three-time series champion Tony Stewart, whose miscue forced his team to replace a gear, transmission and drive shaft following his qualifying run.
"I think I broke something," Stewart radioed to his crew as smoke poured from the rear of his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy after leaving pit road. "I can smell it pretty bad, too."
