DIRECTV to Expand PPV Lineup to 400 Movies

Washington, D.C. (February 19, 2010) -- DIRECTV said yesterday that it plans to expand its Pay Per View lineup to nearly 400 titles sometime in the spring.

The satcaster made the disclosure during an investors call yesterday following the release of its fourth quarter financial report.

"We'll introduce DIRECTV CINEMA later this spring, an exciting new movie service where our customers will watch the latest box office hits with a simple click of their remote rather than waiting days or even weeks to get those same movies by mail," said new DIRECTV CEO Mike White.

DIRECTV officials presumably will use capacity from its new D12 satellite for the PPV expansion; the satellite, which was launched late last year, is expected to be operational in late spring.

The satcaster has said the new satellite will give it the capacity to offer 200 plus HD channels. However, DIRECTV yesterday did not say it planned to add more high-def networks when the satellite is ready.

It's possible that DIRECTV plans to use the satellite to expand its HD PPV offering -- and add 3-D HD channels in the summer -- rather than substantially expand its lineup of high-def networks. With the addition of 50 plus HD PPV "channels," DIRECTV could claim that it now has 200 HD channels.

The PPV expansion should take up considerable space on the new satellite; DIRECTV now offers just 15 titles at any given time.
