Tony Stewart won the pole for Sunday's Duck Commander 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, as three of the four Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolets qualified in the top 12.
Stewart's pole lap was 195.454 miles per hour, just fast enough to knock off the Team Penske Ford of Brad Keselowski, who qualified at 195.397 mph. Kevin Harvick will start on the inside of Row 2 in a second SHR Chevy, flanked by Greg Biffle's Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Row 3 will be Carl Edwards, Biffle's teammate, and the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Denny Hamlin.
There were three rounds of qualifying at the 1.5-mile Texas track: a 25-minute session for all 47 cars, then a 10-minute session for the fastest 24 drivers from round one and then a final five-minute session for the 12 drivers who were fastest in the second session. The pole winner was determined by the fastest speed in the final session.
Harvick led the way in the first round with a lap of 198.282 mph, the fastest lap ever run at a 1.5-mile Sprint Cup qualifying session.
Some big names failed to advance from Round 1, including Clint Bowyer (25th), Matt Kenseth (26th) Kyle Busch (29th), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (31st) and Kasey Kahne (32nd). Surprisingly, Denny Hamlin and Brian Vickers were the only Toyotas to make it to the second round.
Biffle was the fastest in Round 2, followed by Stewart and Harvick. For the first time all year, six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson failed to advance to the final round of qualifying. He'll start the race in 16th, three positions ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Danica Patrick was the slowest in Round 2 and will roll off 24th.
Failing to qualify were David Stremme, Joe Nemechek, J.J. Yeley and Ryan Truex.
