I was at my brothers house yesterday looking at his newly installed IPTV setup provided by his local Telco. From what I can gather the system works as follows. The main box/modem is connected to the twisted pair telephone line coming in from outside.

The main box/modem supplies the Internet connection to his router as well as supplying his 3 STB boxes for his TV. The STB boxes are connected to the box/modem by Cat 5.

Here is my question. Would it be possible to install one of his STB boxes at my home and connect to his main box/modem by Internet (Lan), similar to what we do with IKS?

more than likely not! It is probably linked to the phone number and / or at least the IP. The way they have them set up here I can't even take my modem next door to a neighbor and plug it in to connect to the net. It is actually married to the landline number in some fashion

Nostradamus is quite correct. Your brothers' telco would have jumpered his house to be able to receive both services in the pedestal (the box on the corner you sometimes see telco agents working in). then the MAC address of the modem is "married" to his line, so it will not work on another line until they remove it from his in their system. the STB is similarly paired to his line, so even if you subscribed to identical services, your STB would not be interchangeable.

Thanks for the replies!

I get that the modem is tied to his line by the Mac address and can't be moved. How would the modem know that the STB box is not in the home if you connected it remotely with an "IKS like" system? Wouldn't the STB still receive the necessary "handshake" from the modem?

unfortunately no. most telco who offer such a service will use either Pace or Motorola STB, both of which are tied to the service address, to the point that an installer can not even program the STB from the office, but must do the final programming at the residence. By programming, I mean activate the STB, since the actual channel list programming is pushed through the line by the telco

It may be possible to do it wireless via a WIFI signal, if you can see his house from your house, or live on a hill, can see his house and are within 5 miles or so of him.

Then a WIFI signal can be shot to your house from him and using a WIFI network node at your end you could be part of his LAN setup.

But this is only possible if you can see his house or are close to his house, and may cost a bit to do this.

If you live right next door then a LAN cable can be run to his house from yours.
