hello,
was wondering if there is a receiver out there that allows you to:
1. record one program while simultaneously watching another on a different channel
2. record a program and start watching that same program a few minutes in, in order to skip commercials....for example, if i want to watch football tomorrow, and the game starts at 1 and ends at 4, i want to be able to start at 2 and then play "catch-up" where the game is still recording and i'm watching it while skipping ads
up in canada, rogers has this capability with their boxes of the last few years
any ideas? thanks in advance

Non of the FTA receivers that I know of can do this, as they can't afford the royalty's needed to pay Tivo for the use of their patented technology, the major satellite and cable providers can, that's currently the only way to do that.
Dish tried to get around it, and Tivo sued the pants off them and won.
Single program recording to an internal HD or external HD is old school and Tivo does not hold the rights to that, but the minuet you go into dual operation (watch one, record one or more) or time skipping (going around the commercials) your into their territory.
It will be a few more years before the patent rights run out, then you will see a lot of boxes that can do this.
The only way I know of how to do this right now is with two receivers, or two tuners in a PC.

I think a number of boxes can do record while watching but the channel you are watching has to be on the same transponder. To watch a diff ch on diff TP you have to have multiple tuners. Don't think any can figure out when the signal is commercial though you can fast forward during time delayed recording with boxes like openbox

Dish, Dave and BEV all have receivers that can do this.
But they are not FTA receivers.

Perhaps the poster should clear this up.

I've seen FTA boxes that will let you watch a prerecorded file while recording live. Not the same thing as the OP mentioned but similar in the sense that you can watch something else while recording is going on.
Many boxes have time shift (with an external HDD) that will let you pause and resume play. That should work for your football game. Pause at the beginning then resume after 2 hrs.

Thank you for the replies everyone. Much appreciated.
I was referring to an fta box, yes. So if there are any that anyone knows of, please share.
I haven't heard of a 9242 box...I will do some research on that.
How would a two tuner system work? Either on the jynxbox as stated above, or on your pc?

with the jynx you would need 2 jb200 8psk modules and 2 sat lines run from your dish(s) one for each jb200, you would than be able to record a channel and watch any other channel,
with a single jb200 installed you can record a channel and watch another channel that is on the same transponder

i actually want to be able to have an atsc tuner for ota also, so i don't think two jb200 tuners is an option

If you have the latest Flat screen TV's then you don't need it since the ASTC already comes with the TV

true, but i can't pvr ota programming then...probably not a big deal as i don't do that much anyway
so this two tuner system...is that what rogers and them use for their boxes??

As I see it you already have at least 4 TV options while you're recording:
1. Any other channel on same TP
2. Any video file on your PVR
3. Cable
4. Any other input console/device

All tv's have ATSC inside. That's what separates a t.v. from a monitor. No matter how big the display, without an ATSC inside, its a monitor. Most of the time when people are seeking out ota's on fta boxes, its because they want to be able to pvr ota content.

9242 is a provider receiver. If it were to be modded with the correct equipment, you could use it for iks. It will perform all of the functions that you are looking for in a box. When hooked it up with a high quality ps, it runs equally as smooth as a sub would. conversely, you could get a 622 oem receiver and have it converted to a 9242 and get the same results. Not fta but if you are interested in expanding your horizons, there are plenty of things out there that can teach you what you want to know.
