View Full Version : possible glimmer of hope for KBox HD

I have been able to load Ilink 9600 files to the KBox HD using the Freesat to Ilink9600 conversion files and a null cable. The KBox HD menu now looks like the Ilinks. The problem I am having now is the receiver will not pick up an ip address. Anyone out there have one of these KBox HD receivers to play with?

nope, can't get it working. Need more knowledge than I have to resolve the network connection issue.

have u tried the static ip address?

have u tried the static ip address?
yes, static ip locks the receiver up.

I have one of these receivers in storage, I'll dig it out over the weekend.
Would be nice to breath some life into it :)

The more people that try to get these these receivers working the more likely someone will find the fix. They are nice boxes. I have tried transferring data from a working ILink 9600 to the KBox, the transfer completes but still won't grab an ip address.

I agree, the picture is really nice. Hope somebody figures out a way to bring it back to life.

Before ET site went away, I helped a guy looking at Freesat to Ilink convert issue--would the info developed for that help you guys? It was not much info as the compression used in Freesat/Ilink/Kbox/Topsat files for HD boxes all seem the same and I did not recognize the compression scheme. Still learned a little about the header info and that there does seem to be a common theme going on between the boxes. My best guess was that to get into the code someone would have to pull the flash chip and get the boot code out to get the compression code.

what would help is some information on the Network Protocol that the receivers use. Is it coded into each file or is written to a different chip. Does it get re-written each time a file is loaded.

Any fix or progress on the K2HD conversion file?

Finally found my K2HD in the storage locker so I'll be good to help play/test with this conversion soon.
Any progress with the network issue?

no progress. Still have 2 KBox HD receivers that will convert over but nothing I have tried makes them grab an IP address.

have you tried turning off DHCP in receiver menu, specify a static IP / gateway /mask / dns server
... AND then ...
hook it up to your pc's network port, an on the PC run a network analyzer prog (ie: ethereal) to capture everything on the network card... and see what kind of network packets this box is trying to send out if anything
Also if it does IKS (or if it's supposed to..) via normal newcamd put it in the stream on a channel and see what comes out on the network if anything.

Tried putting in the info manually, locks the receiver up. Tried network Analyzer Wireshark to see if it called out to a certain IP like NFusion does in case NO1 could be used, it didn't seem to do anything. Is it worth trying Ethereal instead of Wireshark?

No luck. Receivers convert to ILink 9600 but don't pick up an IP address.

Sounds like your next step should be a capure of the web comms with wireshark, one with the box as kbox and one as ilink. Compare and contrast.

Anybody had any luck figuring this out? You would figure that with lot of EMU files coming out for Sonicview, people might be able to figure this out.

I would think it would be easy. The sv emu files came as a result of one guy doing a capture of sv to hub comms. That info was used to figure out where to defeat a hub security chip test and that allowed hub emulation (though the key to the security check was discovered along the way so hub emulation could have been done with no file mods). At the heart, was that someone did some testing and that is where you guys have to start--test!!!

Ok, I know this thread is almost ancient but is this box working for any sats at the moment? Can get one very cheap but wanted to see if it was working in any way at all?

For true FTA sure. For 91 degree sat IKS if you are in the footprint, maybe. KBox coders are/were NORW group and used to do coolsat and now do Dreamlink boxes (or as far as I can tell from what I can see in the files they were involved or code was used that once was NORW)--like all models, they encrypt the code to one extent or another and you, as user, can't really do anything creative with the Kbox or newer boxes. The box is not a doorstop, but....

So you are saying that if Im in the footprint for 91 degrees (which I am) it will/may work?

If I am remembering right, 91 degree sat still has active QPSK TP, so if you have IKS service then.....just checked lyngsat, and yep, there is still older modulation being used on that one.

Except it can't do iks

I have one also , it has never had a IKS program written for it. the closest it came to life was a iLink 9600 file will load but no iKS commands. It also would load freesat files and of coarse no IKS.

Well, your support is long gone, so that someone would be you. No one is going to do it for you, as you can tell from how long ago this thread was started--2013!!. Learn to take the files apart, disassemble them and start testing! You can't do anything with the Kbox code since you can't get clear code out of them, but you can disassemble the ilink code I think.

I checked the old stuff I had on a flash drive for other Ilink and that other brand--all had the same file format, so none can be in clear code (but you had 4 years to figure that out). Not only has your support for the kbox gone away but the group has stopped supporting the brand that they went to after kbox. I know I got an even older box doing DSS on 101, but I owned that box and was willing to do the month or two of playing that it took to modify the code. You really need to have folks that are willing to put in the time to learn about the box and how to get into it to modify. In your case I would say either search the web for a way to get clear code, or pull the flash chip and read out the contents to find the routine needed to get to clear code. You work together or fail alone IMO.

I just got a good deal on this box, I have eeprom programmer will read the flash chip and post it. But I have no idea how to modify code or even read it.

Considering the time frame my guess would be no, nope, nada, un uh, I doubt it or slim to none. Long short close to zero but anything is possible I guess but don't see it so far. Maybe 2 weeks or so it has been said in the past on various other ventures. :noidea:
