Stimulant source of failed test
NASCAR driver Allmendinger awaits ‘B’ result

CHARLOTTE Sprint Cup Series driver A.J. Allmendinger, temporarily suspended by NASCAR for failing a random drug test, tested positive for “a stimulant,” his business manager said Wednesday in a statement.

“A.J. tested positive for a stimulant. He has no idea why the first test was positive, and he has never knowingly taken any prohibited substance,” said Tara Ragan, vice president of Walldinger Racing Inc.

Ragan would not divulge the specific stimulant involved.

NASCAR officials would neither confirm nor deny Allmendinger tested positive for a stimulant, citing the sanctioning body’s policy of not divulging the substances found in failed tests.

In the NASCAR rule book’s section describing its substance-abuse policy, stimulants are defined as including amphetamine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy (MDMA), Eve (MDEA), MDA, PMA, Phentermine and other amphetamine derivatives and related compounds.

Ragan suggested Allmendinger’s positive test might have come from the use of an over-the-counter drug.

“A.J. is collecting his medicines and supplements for testing to determine whether an over the counter product caused his positive test,” she said.

“We will have the opportunity to review all of the scientific data surrounding the test following the ‘B’ sample test, but our understanding is that A.J.’s test was slightly above the threshold.”

On Monday, Allmendinger and Penske Racing officials requested to have the driver’s “B” sample tested to confirm the original results.

It will take a few days before NASCAR receives the results of the “B” sample test. If it confirms the first test, Allmendinger will be indefinitely suspended and will have to complete a reinstatement program to be able to drive again.
