Guys,
I need your help! I bought a computer just recently, I remove the HD on my old PC w/c was PATA, right now I have SATA HD on the new one.
I bought an adapter for my old HD, to get all my files. I have Windows 7 Home Edition now, my old one was an XP-Pro.
How do I access my files on my PATA? I forgot to remove the lock on my old HD. How do I remove the administrative security?
I want my old HD to just become like a USB flash drive so I can access all my files.
Thank you in advance! :)

Change the little 2 pin jumper on the back of the old drive were the cables plug in to a "SLAVE" configuration, this should allow you to look at the files on that drive drive.
But if you have programs on that drive you will not be able to run them on the new PC, you will have to re-install then to get then to work on the new one.

use hiren's boot cd to get back access to your drive
first make sure bios sees the hard drive
then unlock it using mini win xp
remove protected status and hidden on all file properties
take ownership of the files in win7
nothing will work if your bios wont see the hd

put the hard drive jumper back in it's original position. it needs to be master, not slave. your files are locked because you do not own them. if this was xp I could help more. google for "take ownership of xp files in windows 7". good luck!

Seawulf is right. you need to set the HD to master or else the system will not boot.

He is trying to use it as a second drive, not the main drive, that is in the new computer, he just wants to get to the data on the old drive..

this is something I have never seen before, actually the jumpers were only necessary on the old IDE drives. SATA can sort things on the fly and reconfigure things as it goes. I have never messed with drives in RAID config much but I am assuming the OP is just using the system JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Drives) so I think I would be looking in the BIOS if Win7 is not detecting new hardware.
one other thing that might work is if you installed that drive into an external HD enclosure and connected it via USB port
seems to me the easiest way is to put your old drive back in your old pc. Start it up and log in and move all files from your personal login area to a folder on the main drive like c:\temp etc. The files on your old hard drive in your user login area are encrypted but once you take them out of that area they are not encrypted. Then if you want you take it back out and set it up the sata way and delete all the other stuff you do not want and keep that folder you moved your files into. Or rename it etc.

so much confusion in this thread.
OP has added a SATA drive to his computer and installed Win7. One drive one channel, no master/slave relationship. OP has stated that he bought an adapter for his old PATA drive, the old drive needs to be jumpered as Master for the adapter to see it. OP should now plug the usb adapter in and should be able to SEE the PATA drive. He no longer owns these files so Google "take ownership of XP files on Win7" to access the old files.

Well the way I read his first post, he bought a new computer, it has W7 home on it,(never installed it, it came that way) he wants the old hard drive from his old PC to be seen by the new computer.
And I just jumper them to "cable select" they work fine.
As far as the files go, that's a different problem.
