OK so I was on my 1st gen (yes 1st gen) touch last night and all was fine and turned it off as normal when I was done.
This morning I push the power button at the top and voila I have a screen of death of some sort. See the pic I attached. Cannot perform any actions whatsoever though. I was and able to shut it back down holding the power and main button together.
Have never seen this nor heard of it. I haven't researched the web yet as I figured there would be someone here that knew of this.
I thought maybe pluging it in to iTunes and wiping it clean might help but did not want to start messing with it until I might get some feedback.
No I did not put anything new on it in the last 2 mnths and all I did last night was check satfix.
Can anybody offer some advice or suggestions other than by a new one?
Does anybody have a clue what may have caused this.
Is it possible a chip inside went on vacation?
Thanks for any feedback members.

Have you tried recharging it, sometimes when the battery gets real low (or dead and wont take a charge anymore), it will do this, how long have you waited till anything showed up ? (if it does) <br />

Hmm other stuff?:noidea:
Well I've got to the point where at least during a restore I am getting error codes which help.
My latest is a 1611 code... so I just deleted everything Apple on the cpu and am trying a fresh copy of itunes to see what happens.
I might try an older version if this does not work.

I would try and help out a bit more, but now my Ipod is now acting up also, I wonder if there is a new virus going around?
Time to beat my head against the wall for a bit, 4800 songs are now gone.

I thought about that last night but ruled it impossible.
When I was trying everything under the sun and then just sat back to think I was wondering if the latest update file has anything to do with it.
I have yet to load a older version on another cpu to try something but I do know one thing.
Even though I wiped the computer clean of all apple sotware and plugged the unit in and had to put iTunes back in, it did with my music etc.
But still no access other than going into the HD itself in the apple folders and that didn't help either.
Still have a pink screen when not plugged in.

downloading the new updated version it changes your computer settings to 16 bit color scheme. Go to your desktop properties and change it to 32 bit and everything will go back to normal.
found this on the net

Can't do a restore from iTunes?
I remember you have to hold the power and home button at the same time and then connect via USB through iTunes and it should work.. I googled it when my touch went pink too

Well I have a couple other things to attemp before I "accidently" drop it from a highrise.
Maybe I will try a restore on a xp computer.
Thanks for the suggestion cause 2 win 7 systems won't do it.
Bt the way did you have iTunes open when you held the home and power button then plugged in or closed then opened it up?

OK got mine back, I did the hold the "Home & Power" button WHILE plugged into the PC with Itunes running, (it is a W7 OS on that PC) however I did check before hand that Itunes was up to date, it updated it and I re-started the PC afterwards.
Did the power thingy and waited, after about 60 to 90 seconds the "Do you want to restore your Ipod" thing came up on the PC, I said yes, I also said to check for software up dates to the Ipod, and in about 3 hours I had everything back.
My brother in-law had the same problem a while back, but he took his to an Apple store, they waived their magic wand over it and fixed it in short time.

See, that's my problem Terryl. I start the restore and it runs for about 5 mins then I get 1604 error code or some other code. Out of the 52 and 1/2 times I tried lol about 95% of the time it is the stupid 1604 error which is usb related based on Apples reference.
If I brought this unit to the Apple store they would probably call the smithsonian it's so old.:tehe:
Terryl
04-02-2012, 06:36 PM
Do you have another USB cable for that unit, the cable its self may be at fault, also try a different USB port, I had to do that, and your doing this right from the PC and not through a USB hub right?
And it looks like the "1604" error is a common one, did you Google for that error code?
I came up with a ton of stuff on that.
Anubis
04-02-2012, 06:51 PM
Yes on the different cable. - tried it and no go same result.
Yes on the different usb port - ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yes on the into PC and not through a hub.
Before you ask yes tried on a second pc.
Yes I googled the error code. I verified all the data I found with the Apple sitein case I was missing something.
I'm sure I a missing something somewhere.
I was able to see the cord and plug in symbol once. I also now have the pink screen when the unit first comes on then colour changes to blue with white lines.

As I don't like leaving things hanging in forum threads, just a update.
I gave up on my end trying to restore this paper weight. Brought it into work and just for the fun of it asked our systems analyst to have some fun.
He emailed me not long ago with this responce....
"This iPod is pooched. I tried factory as well as custom firmware but it will not take any of the firmware files. Looks like the DFU mode is broken and it won’t allow any firmware to be downloaded to it.
This might be a good time to try “will it blend?” "
I think just for the heck of it I am going to bring it to the fruit store and see what the genius counter applications say is the problem.
Then I will see if it will "blend".:tehe:
fonger
04-04-2012, 07:28 PM
then the last thing to do is to contact apple.
they may ask you to send it to them (free shipping) and hopefully they will send you a brand spanking new one..
for all gen 1 ipod and shuffles, they have replaced them for free with the lastest and greatest. give them a shout, it's worth it.

I hope you backed up all your stuff on that thing...........And don't blend it, it's tough on the blender blades.
Fonger, will they (Apple) put all the info back on or is it a blank Ithingy when it comes back?
On some systems there are ways to recover the data and re-install afterwards.

Ahhh sorry I didnt see this one.
You did not try this fix,
Step 1. put unit in brown paper bag, and seal up with lots and lots of duct tape
Step 2. attach with lots and lots and lots of knots, and many many wraps, a long piece of good strong packing twine.
Step 3. go out at midnight on front lawn on a full Moon, and stand in an open area.
Step 4. and this is the most important one, swing the unit, in the brown paper bag, with lots and lots of duct tape, and lots and lots of very tight knots, and a long piece of good strong twine, over your head as fast as you can, while screaming like a chicken.
This has been proven to fix most problems, as ether the unit fly's off the string and is never seen again, or you are hauled off to the loonies bin and put in a padded room, thus solving all problems, for a bit.

As already mentioned by another member, Hold down the power button and Home button at the same time, hold until you see usb cable itunes screen then restore via latest version of itunes, if jailbroken you will need to create a fake ispw with ireb then use that to restore ipod. I have revived many ipods and this method as worked everytime.

Thanks for the feedback however that screen does not come up. The ipod shuts down when you do that.
As I previously mentioned in post #27 even one of our IT Techies could not fix it and they deal with our companies iPhones daily.
